PEDIATRIC CLERKSHIP – EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
The objective of the Pediatric Clerkship is to
facilitate the student’s attainment of the Core
Pediatric (CP) and Universal (U) competencies as
outlined in the Curriculum.
Knowledge and Lifelong Learning
By the conclusion of the Pediatric Clerkship, students
will demonstrate:
- Acquisition of basic knowledge of growth
and development (physical, physiologic and
psychosocial) and of its clinical application
from birth through adolescence
- Acquisition of the knowledge necessary for
the diagnosis and initial management of common
acute and chronic illnesses
- Development of clinical problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of the ethical, social, economic,
and cultural influences upon the health of and
health care delivery to diverse patients and
patient populations
- Understanding of the influence of family, community,
and society on the child in health and disease
and how to respond to these factors by through
appropriate course of action at both the individual
and the community level
- Recognition of effective strategies for health
promotion as well as disease and injury prevention
- Ability to access a broad range of resources
in support of evidence-based decisionmaking for
the evaluation and treatment of clinical conditions
Interpersonal and Communication
By the conclusion of the Pediatric Clerkship, students
will demonstrate:
- Development of communication skills that
facilitate clinical interaction with children,
adolescents, and their families to ensure complete,
accurate data are obtained
- Establish a professional relationship with
a patient
- Display sensitivity and responsiveness to
patient’s and parents’ culture, ethnicity,
gender and disabilities
- Build a comprehensive medical and social/personal
history
- Competency in the physical examination of infants,
children, and adolescents
- Conduct a focused or comprehensive physical
examination as indicated
- Utilize an approach suitable for the patient’s
developmental and cognitive level
- Construct a differential diagnosis, and recommend
a course of treatment consistent with current
standards of care
- Ability to communicate (written & oral)
clearly, professionally, and effectively with
patients, their family members, health care team
members, and peers
- Ability to listen and respond appropriately
to constructive feedback from peers and teachers,
as well as give constructive feedback and evaluation
to peers and faculty as requested
- An understanding of the approach of pediatricians
to the healthcare of children and adolescents
through interactions with community financial,
political, and legal resources
Professionalism
By the conclusion of the Pediatric Clerkship, students
will demonstrate:
- Development of the attitudes and professional
behaviors appropriate for clinical practice
- Identify personal strengths and weaknesses
in the care of patients and working with colleagues
and allied health professionals
- Sensitivity to differences in cultural, ethnic,
educational, socioeconomic, and sexual orientation
backgrounds and the ability to respond appropriately
within these contexts
- Demonstrate the ability to make changes in
their own behavior that facilitate collaborative
relationships
- Demonstrate a pattern of responsible behaviors
consistent with the highest ethical standards
of the profession: honesty, confidentiality,
reliability, dependability, civility, and punctuality
- Demonstrate a commitment to leadership and
the advancement of new knowledge
